This comprehensive self paced online course prepares you to lead certification audits of an integrated management system against ISO 9001:2026, ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 14001:2026 together. You will learn to manage an audit programme, lead an audit team, and carry a certification audit from Stage 1 readiness review through the Stage 2 conformity audit, the audit report, and a defensible certification recommendation, using ISO 19011:2026 as your auditing framework.
The course follows a realistic, scenario based approach, so you practise the certification audit the way it happens in the field: setting up the audit programme, planning and leading Stage 1 and Stage 2, directing the audit team, gathering and evaluating evidence, raising findings, reporting, and recommending certification. It opens with a focused recap of all three standards so you are grounded in quality, health and safety, and environmental requirements before you audit against them, and shows how the shared Harmonised Structure lets you audit common clauses once while still testing each discipline properly.
Key concepts covered
- Planning and managing an audit programme across three disciplines, including risk, resourcing and auditor competence
- Leading an audit team: roles, briefing and debriefing, allocating work, and managing conduct and difficult situations
- The two stage certification audit: the purpose of Stage 1 readiness review and the Stage 2 conformity audit, and the handover between them
- Conducting the Stage 2 audit on site and remotely, including the opening and closing meetings
- Gathering and evaluating objective evidence and reaching findings across quality, health and safety, and the environment
- Writing Major NC, Minor NC, and OFI statements, and evaluating proposed corrective action and root cause
- Writing the audit report and making and justifying a certification recommendation
- Surveillance and recertification across the three year certification cycle

Becoming a lead auditor across ISO 9001:2026, ISO 45001:2018, ISO 14001:2026 and ISO 19011:2026 positions you to lead certification audits of any organisation running an integrated management system. This course enables you to:
- Plan and manage an audit programme and lead an audit team with confidence and consistency
- Lead the two stage certification audit of three standards in a single, efficient engagement rather than three separate exercises
- Reach sound, defensible findings and a certification recommendation that will stand up to review
- Add senior audit capability that certification bodies and consultancies actively seek
- Take the decisive step in your auditing career, towards third party auditing and Exemplar Global Personnel Certification

- Built to stick. Interactive, multi format lessons keep you engaged and improve retention
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Plan and manage an audit programme for an integrated management system in accordance with ISO 19011:2026
- Lead an audit team, allocating work, briefing and debriefing auditors, and managing conduct throughout the audit
- Plan and conduct a Stage 1 readiness review and a Stage 2 certification audit of an integrated management system covering all three standards
- Audit shared Harmonised Structure clauses once while testing each discipline against its own requirements
- Gather and evaluate objective evidence across quality, health and safety, and the environment, and distinguish evidence from inference
- Write Major NC, Minor NC, and OFI statements that are factual and defensible, and evaluate proposed corrective action and root cause
- Write a clear audit report and make and justify a certification recommendation
- Explain surveillance and recertification activities across the certification cycle
Beyond auditing technique, this course explains how ISO certification works, so you understand the system you audit within. You will cover the role of certification bodies and accreditation, the two stage initial certification audit (Stage 1 and Stage 2), how the certification decision is made independently of the audit team, and how certification is maintained through surveillance and recertification.
This course is designed for experienced auditors and management systems professionals moving into lead auditor and certification audit work, including:
- Internal auditors progressing to lead auditor and third party auditing
- Auditors who already conduct audits and want to lead audit teams and certification audits
- Consultants who prepare organisations for certification and want to understand the audit from the auditor side
- Management representatives and QHSE, sustainability, governance, risk and compliance leaders responsible for certification readiness
- Anyone pursuing Exemplar Global Personnel Certification as a management systems lead auditor
There are no hard prerequisites for this course.
A working knowledge of the current versions of ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, together with prior internal auditing experience, is strongly recommended and will help you get the most from the lead auditor material. If you have not yet audited an integrated system, we recommend completing our Integrated Management Systems Internal Auditor course first as the natural prior step. This course also includes a focused recap of all three standards before the auditing modules.
Some of our courses share the same lessons. If you have already done those lessons in another course with us, you will not have to watch them again. You just do what is new in this course. This happens automatically when you enrol.
This is not the formal Recognition of Prior Learning that exempts you from a qualification, and it does not mean there is nothing left to do. It saves you time, while the units that make up your course remain mandatory to complete.
You will need a computer, laptop, or tablet with a reliable internet connection. The course works in any modern web browser, such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari. For the best experience, keep your browser updated to the latest version.

The course was well structured, challenging, and highly relevant to real-world lead auditing.

The ISO 45001 Lead Auditor course was clear, practical, and very well structured. The case studies, audit planning exercises, NCR writing, and final audit report assignment helped connect the standard’s requirements to real-world auditing. I especially valued the focus on objective evidence, clause alignment, audit conclusions, and the difference between making a certification recommendation and the final certification decision. The templates and examples were also very useful and made the course easy to follow. Overall, it was a highly valuable course that strengthened both my ISO 45001 knowledge and my confidence as an auditor.
