What you will learn
  • Why ISO 14001 was revised, what the 2026 edition replaces, and the transition timeline to around 30 April 2029
  • How Clause 4.1 now names environmental conditions, including climate change, pollution levels, natural resources and biodiversity, as examples in your context analysis. This is a clarification through examples, not a new requirement, and 4.2 and 4.4 are unchanged
  • The single word deleted in Clause 5.1, which widens top management support to leadership at every level, not just managers
  • The reorganised Clause 6.1 planning flow, with risks and opportunities determined last in the new subclause 6.1.4 and planning action moving to 6.1.5, and the tidy up of the risk definition
  • The new Clause 6.3 Planning of changes, an alignment with the other management system standards that adds no new requirement
  • The Clause 7.4.1 communication change, so appropriate evidence of communications is now expected in every relevant case
  • The Clause 8.1 change from outsourced processes to externally provided processes, products or services, with a relevance test that targets control where it affects the environmental management system
  • The Clause 9.2.2 changes: an objective stated for every internal audit, and the audit programme held as documented information
  • The common available as documented information wording that runs across the standard, and the Clause 10 renumbering that moves continual improvement to 10.1 with no new requirement
  • What every change means for your system and your audits, and what an auditor will look for
  • How to run a gap analysis and build a prioritised transition plan using the included checklist
Who is this for?

Anyone with working knowledge of ISO 14001:2015 who needs to move to the 2026 edition. This is a short update course of about four hours, not a full clause by clause course. It teaches only the delta and assumes you already know the previous edition.

The format

This is a four hour self paced online course. You learn through short videos and a full learner guide, and finish with one final exam. There are no quizzes and no tasks to submit. You also download a gap analysis and transition plan checklist to take straight back to your own system.

  • Course Overview
  • The Revision, Timeline and New Wording
Final Assessment

Already completed a course with us at this level? You may not need to repeat everything you have already covered.

Where you have recently trained with us, we recognise that prior learning so you can focus on what is new in this course. It applies automatically when you enrol.

This transition course goes further than a briefing. It brings you up to date on the 2026 edition and hands you the tools to act on it. It enables you to:

  • Identify the key differences between ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 14001:2026 with confidence
  • Understand what each change means for your environmental management system, your audits, and continued conformance
  • Apply a practical gap analysis and build a prioritised transition plan using the included checklist
  • Earn a certified credential by passing the final exam
  • Focus only on the delta, saving the time of a full course
Why learning online works for you
  • Learn anytime, anywhere. Study on demand, on site or off site, whenever it suits you
  • Self paced. Move at your own speed and focus on the changes most relevant to you
  • Practical tools. A full learner guide and a downloadable gap analysis checklist you take straight back to your own system
  • Cost effective. No travel, accommodation, or time away from the office to fund
  • Lifetime access. Return to the materials and the checklist whenever you need them

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the key differences between ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 14001:2026
  • Explain why the standard was revised and the transition timeline that applies
  • Describe how Clause 4.1 now names environmental conditions, including climate change, as examples in your context analysis, and that 4.2 and 4.4 are unchanged
  • Explain the deleted word in Clause 5.1 that widens leadership support beyond managers, and the available as documented information wording on the environmental policy
  • Describe the reorganised Clause 6.1 flow with risks and opportunities in the new subclause 6.1.4, and the new Clause 6.3 Planning of changes
  • Explain the Clause 7.4.1 communication records change and the Clause 8.1 change to externally provided processes with its relevance test
  • Identify the Clause 9.2.2 audit objective and documented programme requirements, the realigned management review inputs at 9.3.2, and the Clause 10 renumbering
  • Explain what each change means for your system and your audits, and what an auditor will look for
  • Apply a gap analysis and build a prioritised transition plan using the included checklist

As a bonus, this course explains how ISO certification works. You will learn what it means for an organisation to be certified, the role of accredited certification bodies and accreditation, and how organisations achieve and maintain certification.

This course is designed for anyone with working knowledge of ISO 14001:2015 who needs to move to the 2026 edition, including:

  • Implementers and management system owners maintaining an environmental management system
  • Internal auditors trained on the 2015 edition who audit against the standard
  • Environmental managers, coordinators, and process owners
  • Consultants updating their clients from the 2015 to the 2026 edition
  • Those advising top management on the transition to the new edition

This course assumes a working knowledge of ISO 14001:2015. It teaches only the changes introduced in the 2026 edition, not the full standard.

If you are new to ISO 14001, start with our ISO 14001 Foundation course instead, which teaches the standard in full.

You will need a computer, laptop, or tablet with a reliable internet connection. The course works in any modern web browser, such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari. For the best experience, keep your browser updated to the latest version.

What does this transition course cover?

It is built around three short modules. Module 1 sets out the revision and your transition, covering why the standard changed and the transition timeline. Module 2 works through what changed and what it means, one short video per change theme, each covering what changed, why, the impact on your system, and the audit evidence. The themes are climate change and environmental conditions in context, enhanced expectations on environmental aspects and impacts, life cycle thinking, planning requirements including the new change management at 6.3 and strengthened risk based thinking at 6.1.4, emergency preparedness and response updates, and the harmonised wording changes including the Clause 10 restructure. Module 3 is your transition plan, covering how to run a gap analysis and build a prioritised transition plan, followed by the final exam. It does not teach the full standard.

Who is this course for?

Anyone with working knowledge of ISO 14001:2015 who needs to move to the 2026 edition: implementers, internal auditors, environmental managers and process owners, consultants, and those advising top management on the transition.

Do I need prior ISO 14001 knowledge to take this course?

Yes. This course assumes a working knowledge of ISO 14001:2015. It teaches only what changed, so it is not suitable as a first introduction to the standard. If you are new to ISO 14001, take our ISO 14001 Foundation course, which teaches the standard in full.

How long does the course take and how is it delivered?

It is a four hour self paced online course. You learn through short videos and a full learner guide, and finish with one final exam. There are no quizzes and no tasks to submit. You study on demand, at your own pace, whenever it suits you.

What resource do I get to help with the transition?

You download a gap analysis and transition plan checklist. It takes you through comparing your current system against the 2026 edition, identifying the gaps, and building a prioritised plan to close them. It is yours to use on your own environmental management system.

Is this an accredited course and what do I receive?

Yes. This is an Exemplar Global certified course. When you pass the final exam you receive a Certificate of Attainment and a Credly digital badge issued by Exemplar Global that you can share on LinkedIn and elsewhere. It is a real credential, stronger than a certificate of participation.

Does this course replace full ISO 14001 training?

No. It is a transition course that teaches only the changes from the 2015 edition to the 2026 edition. It assumes you already know the previous edition. For full training, take our ISO 14001 Foundation, Internal Auditor, or Lead Auditor course.

What is the transition timeline for ISO 14001:2026?

ISO 14001:2026 was published in April 2026 and replaces ISO 14001:2015. There is a three year transition from publication, so ISO 14001:2015 certificates remain valid until April 2029. Confirm the exact dates with your certification body, as they are set by the accreditation bodies rather than by ISO.
