What is ISO 13485?
ISO 13485 is the international standard for a Quality Management System (QMS) in the medical device industry. It sets out the requirements an organisation follows to consistently design, produce and supply medical devices that are safe, perform as intended, and meet applicable regulatory requirements.
Unlike ISO 9001, ISO 13485 is built for a regulatory purpose and keeps the clause 4 to 8 structure based on ISO 9001:2008 rather than the harmonised structure. It threads risk management and regulatory compliance through every clause. Certification is awarded by an accredited certification body after a successful audit of the organisation's quality management system.
Who ISO 13485 training is for
- Quality and regulatory affairs staff in medical device companies
- Internal auditors and anyone preparing for a certification or MDSAP audit
- Consultants advising medical device clients on ISO 13485
- Suppliers and contract manufacturers to device makers
- Professionals moving into a Lead Auditor role
The standard in brief
What ISO 13485 covers
ISO 13485 is built around clauses 4 to 8. Here is what each part covers.
Quality management system
Establish and maintain the QMS, document your regulatory role, apply a risk based approach to processes, and build the medical device file for each device type or family.
Management responsibility
Top management commitment to customer and regulatory requirements, the quality policy and objectives, the management representative role, and management review.
Resource management
Competent personnel, suitable infrastructure that prevents product mixup, and work environment and contamination control for clean and sterile devices.
Product realization
Design and development controls, risk management to ISO 14971, purchasing and supplier control, production and sterile device requirements, identification, UDI and traceability.
Measurement, analysis and improvement
Feedback from production and postproduction, complaint handling and regulatory reporting, internal audit, control of nonconforming product, and corrective and preventive action.
Why it matters
Benefits of ISO 13485
What organisations and professionals gain from working to ISO 13485.
- Regulatory market access, including the TGA in Australia and the MDSAP pathway across five regulators
- Safer medical devices through risk management built into design and production
- Risk management aligned with ISO 14971 from design inputs through to postmarket surveillance
- Traceability and recall readiness, with advisory notices you can issue at any time
- Access to supply contracts and tenders that require a certified QMS
- A controlled, documented system you can demonstrate to regulators and auditors
Clearing up a common mix up
Personnel certification vs business certification
People often confuse the two. They are different things, earned by different parties, and only one is a person.
Personnel certification
Certifies the individual.
- Earned by a person, not a company
- Recognised by Exemplar Global
- Proves you can audit to the standard
- The path our courses prepare you for
Business certification
Certifies the organisation.
- Earned by a company, not a person
- Issued by a certification body such as Intertek or SAI Global
- Proves the management system conforms to ISO 13485
- Maintained through surveillance audits
Audit Workshop trains and certifies people. We do not certify organisations, we prepare the people who build and audit them.
Organisations are certified to ISO 13485 by accredited certification bodies such as Intertek, SAI Global, BSI, SGS, and DNV, several of which are also MDSAP recognised auditing organisations. Audit Workshop trains the people; the certification body certifies the organisation.

Is ISO 13485 the same as ISO 9001?
No. ISO 13485 is a standalone quality management standard for a regulatory purpose, focused on medical device safety, performance and regulatory compliance. ISO 9001 aims at customer satisfaction and continual improvement, while ISO 13485 is about maintaining a consistent, documented, effective system.
Does ISO 13485 use the harmonised structure like ISO 9001?
No. ISO 13485 keeps the clause 4 to 8 structure based on ISO 9001:2008. It is not Annex SL, so it does not share the clause 4 to 10 layout used by ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001.
Do I need to know ISO 14971 as well?
Risk management to ISO 14971 runs through ISO 13485, so the courses explain how risk outputs feed design inputs, validation and production. You do not need to be an ISO 14971 expert to start, but understanding the link matters for auditing.
Is the training accredited?
